Massage
for the Medically Fragile
This class will be focused on LMTs who wish to safely treat oncological patients. Other medically fragile special populations will be discussed, and the application of the techniques taught in class will be applicable to these same populations.
There will be pathophysiological and anatomical lectures concerning cancer, frailty, the elderly, and severe acute injury. We will discuss several medications we might find in these populations; and how they might change massage. We will discuss the difficult emotional and ethical issues special populations might experience. The discussions are intended to help LMTs stay within their scope of practice while holding space for these special populations.
Finally, techniques covered in class will include manual lymphatic drainage (MLD/Vodder method), gentle approaches to Swedish massage, reflexology for the immune system, and other gentle release techniques. The students will be guided on choosing which techniques to apply to particular populations; and how to bolster or position clients to increase their comfort.
