In this course, we will learn about special considerations in working with clients who are being treated for different forms of cancer. We will look at how research informs how we work with clients now and what myths have been dispelled with regards to Massage Therapy and cancer treatments. We will briefly discuss Lymphatic Drainage and other therapies to be employed with our clients post surgically.
After taking this course, the learner will be able to:
- Understand the concept of stages of cancer
- Be able to recognize possible cancerous lesions on the skin and know when to refer the client to a specialist
- Understand how cancer spreads or metastasizes
- Consider how to modify treatment based on medical devices client may have implanted or in place
- Understand different cancer treatments and how they affect the body
Attitudes and standards of practice when it comes to treating our clients going through various cancer treatments have changed drastically over the last several decades. Let’s learn about the most currently accepted methods to safely and effectively work with them to provide the most compassionate, informed care.

Massage for the Medically Fragile
This class will be focused on LMTs who wish to safely treat oncological patients. Other medically fragile special populations will be discussed, and the application of the techniques taught in class will be applicable to these same populations.
There will be pathophysiological and anatomical lectures concerning cancer, frailty, the elderly, and severe acute injury. We will discuss several medications we might find in these populations; and how they might change massage. We will discuss the difficult emotional and ethical issues special populations might experience. The discussions are intended to help LMTs stay within their scope of practice while holding space for these special populations.
Finally, techniques covered in class will include manual lymphatic drainage (MLD/Vodder method), gentle approaches to Swedish massage, reflexology for the immune system, and other gentle release techniques. The students will be guided on choosing which techniques to apply to particular populations; and how to bolster or position clients to increase their comfort.
